Author Guidelines

General requirements

  • Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, not under review elsewhere, and within the Focus and Scope.
  • Language: English or Arabic (with English title, abstract of 200–250 words, and 4–6 keywords).
  • Submit an anonymised Word file (.docx) using the journal template.

Citing manuscripts

  • Every manuscript cited must be identified by holding institution, collection, shelfmark, and folio or page (e.g., Leiden University Library, Or. 1234, fol. 12v).
  • Describe the physical and textual features that support your argument (support, dimensions, script, colophon, date, provenance) where relevant.
  • Link to digitised copies when openly available.

Images

Manuscript images require written permission from the holding institution or owner, stated in the caption. Minimum resolution 300 dpi. The CC BY-SA licence of the article does not override the rights of image owners.

Text editions

State the editorial principles (critical or diplomatic), list all witnesses with sigla, present variants in an apparatus, and provide an English translation and commentary. Arabic-script text may be supplied in Unicode with a romanised transcription.

Transliteration

Arabic follows the ALA-LC Romanization tables; Jawi and Pegon follow ALA-LC conventions for Malay and Javanese; apply one system consistently.

References

Use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th ed.), notes and bibliography, managed with Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote. Include DOIs where available. List primary sources (manuscripts) and secondary literature separately in the bibliography.

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • The submission is original and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The file is anonymised for double-blind review.
  • English title, abstract (200–250 words), and 4–6 keywords are provided.
  • All manuscripts are cited with holding institution, shelfmark, and folio.
  • Permission for all manuscript images has been obtained and stated in captions.
  • References follow Chicago notes-bibliography and include DOIs where available.
  • Funding, conflicts of interest, and any use of generative AI are declared.
  • The corresponding author has entered an active WhatsApp number in their user profile (Edit Profile › Contact › Phone). This number is used only for editorial correspondence and is never published.

Original research; double-blind review by at least two reviewers.

Text Editions

Critical or diplomatic editions with translation and commentary; double-blind review.

Collection Reports and Data Papers

Reports on collections, catalogue notes, and manuscript datasets; double-blind review.

Reviews

Reviews of books, catalogues, and digital resources; editorial review.
